Upcoming Course Offers Wisdom on Leading an Employee-Owned Company
By Emily Meyertholen, Beyster Institute Staff

In October, the leaders of employee-owned companies have a unique opportunity to learn about the management strategies and techniques that help maximize the power of employee ownership.  The Beyster Institute and the Rady Center for Executive Development are once again offering “Essentials for Managing an Employee-Owned Company,” an intensive three-day course for managers, executives and entrepreneurs October 26 through 29 in San Diego.

This breakthrough program was first offered last year to rave reviews.  “The course was very in-depth and precise for something that can be very complex,” said one participant.  “The specific, practical examples helped a lot.”

The program offers participants an opportunity to thoroughly explore many of the unique issues that face employee ownership company managers every day.  “In the course materials, I see things that we, as an ESOP company, are attempting to do,” said another participant.  “Now I understand why.”

Each session of the course is designed and developed specifically to address the needs of managers in employee ownership environments. The range of topics includes improving employees’ financial understanding of the company and using employee ownership to help brand and market the company.

The program is designed to benefit leaders from companies who are fully or partially owned by their employees, whether through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), broad-based stock option plan, or any other equity sharing vehicle. “One of the most important lessons I learned was that there is a big difference between how management and employees view ESOPs,” said a participant. “I learned a lot about what I can do to help everyone understand their role in it.”

Specialized additional topics include in-depth explorations of fiduciary roles and considerations and the many compliance and administrative needs of employee ownership company managers. Perhaps the most beneficial aspect of the program is that it will allow managers to take advantage of the best resource employee ownership companies have at their disposal – others in the community who have already been through the process successfully.

Presenters include guest faculty from the University of Wisconsin, faculty from the Rady School of Management and employee ownership experts from the Beyster Institute. The program fee, including supporting materials, is $1,950 and the enrollment will be space-limited.  A 10% discount is available for those who enroll by August 31, or for companies who enroll multiple participants.  Click here for further details or to register for this innovative program.
